ABSTRACT

This chapter critiques and reflects on two closely connected aspects of Gerald Grace’s work in Catholic education. The first is his conception of ‘spiritual capital’, in particular as it is presented in his 2002 study, which is derived from his fieldwork interviews with 60 secondary headteachers. The second is the achievements of the Centre for Research and Development in Catholic Education that Gerald Grace created in 1997. At the heart of this chapter it is argued that ‘formation’ is identified as the key to protecting this ‘spiritual capital’ over time from globalising, secularising and marketising forces.
