ABSTRACT

Our modern day lifestyle activities (i.e. eating, travelling, shopping, cleaning, working, relaxing) all affect the environment directly and indirectly. Students from all disciplines need to understand that our production and consumption activities have an impact on the environment. For example, the emissions from the combustion of fuels to run our vehicles put gases into the atmosphere. These gases not only pollute and change the composition of the air, but this change in air quality also affects human health and can have negative impacts on our global ecosystems and climate. This chapter explores a broad number of anthropogenic environmental impacts and reviews the important role of impact assessment in establishing the connection between our production and consumption activities and environmental impact. It is suggested that environmental impact assessment methodologies play a foundational role in sustainability education.
