ABSTRACT

It has long been recognised that teachers have a pivotal role in promoting environmentally responsible citizenship. This means that teacher education programs for future and current primary, secondary and tertiary teachers, both in universities and as professional development activities, are needed to build teachers’ confidence and competence to engage their students with environmental/sustainability education. However, teacher education institutions have been slow to respond to this need and introduce sustainability education into their programs. While some incidental content may be included in some programs, mainstreaming sustainability in teacher education programs remains a challenge. This chapter discusses the content such programs should include (sustainability content knowledge, attitudes and behaviours as well as transformative pedagogies) and some of the obstacles to implementing sustainability in teacher education.
