ABSTRACT

Transdisciplinary learning communities (TLCs) are effective pedagogical tools for teaching sustainability. This effectiveness is based on the complexity of sustainability issues that require a multidisciplinary approach, combined with in-depth practical knowledge. TLCs offer a collaborative approach to resolving sustainability issues, while exposing students to the knowledge of various disciplines and a variety of practitioners. The involvement of students, scholars, and practitioners in a TLC approach allows for the contextualization of sustainability issues, a reduction of the complexity into sub-issues, and collaborative learning. This chapter proposes different avenues on how to engage students in TLCs in order to intensify the learning process of solving complex sustainability issues.
