ABSTRACT

Sustainability, as a societal goal to ameliorate the deleterious effects of human behaviour on the planet, has been supported in all sectors of education for the last two decades. Universities, in particular are considered a strategic and effective ‘leverage point’ for sustainability, as they have the capacity to transform the thinking and views of future decision makers. They are well positioned to be leaders in sustainability education. There is some evidence of sustainability within the governance or campus operations of universities but less evidence of education for sustainability (EfS). This chapter addresses how teaching and learning in higher education can be organised to support the purposes set out by the EfS agenda. It sets out key elements of EfS for teaching academics, irrespective of their discipline area, to include in their curriculum design and pedagogical practices.
