ABSTRACT

Universities have been identified as having a role in educating the community about sustainability since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. This role includes not only teaching and research in natural, technical and social sciences and arts but also engaging in interdisciplinary enquiries and problem solving. While some universities have committed to environmental sustainability, for example, through signing the Talloires Declaration, many have not. This chapter presents a case study of one university that signed this declaration in 1995. In particular, it focuses on what the university has done in terms of the effectiveness and sustainability of the funded sustainability-related initiatives and what else could be done to strength this university’s, and others’, commitment to sustainability.
