ABSTRACT

In this fifth and final seminar in the series Garfinkel presents an overview of his proposal on the discovering sciences as sciences of practical actions. Professor Robert Westman, a distinguished visitor to the seminar who at the time was a member of the UCLA History Department, and other participants, engaged Garfinkel in a lively dialogue about Garfinkel’s version of discovering work and the radically localized object of discovery. Garfinkel ends the seminar with a foray into what he calls the “demonic” order of unforeseen contingencies.
