ABSTRACT

Bram Constandt and Annick Willem critically examine the adoption of codes of ethics by sport organisations. This practice constitutes a core principle in most frameworks for good governance in sport and, as such, is increasingly adopted by sport organisations of all kinds to prevent and counteract unethical behaviour. Building on an extensive literature study, they outline the do's (i.e. points of attention) and don'ts (i.e. pitfalls) of creating, implementing, and enforcing codes of ethics in sport organisations. Through a case study of FIFA, they demonstrate how ethical leadership and external controls and pressures are required to fully translate the policies of a code of ethics into the actual practices of a sport organisation.
