ABSTRACT

This essay explores the importance of good-quality design in affordable and social housing. It argues that good design is a critical component for successful social housing development essential for its residents and the community where it is built for years to come. Good design may be the most viable strategy to improve the quality, functionality, asset value and acceptance of affordable housing. The essay identifies several design strategies: create synergies, integrate in the urban fabric, design flexible housing spaces, implement sustainable design + form and select green materials + assemblies. We explore the creative implementation of these strategies in five award-winning projects in Paris designed by Avenier Cornejo Architects with emphasis on design innovation.
