ABSTRACT

A new generation of architectural practices is transforming social housing across Europe. Responding to ongoing demand and working with newly energised clients, architects are once again addressing how affordable homes can be delivered with high standards of design. This chapter presents key lessons from projects in European cities that are shifting perceptions of affordable housing. A case study in Rotterdam highlights unobtrusive renovation strategies in housing estates. The creation of co-housing in Vienna contributes to social mixing of generations, languages and cultures. The case studies in London explore high-quality council housing that participates in the intimate urban form of the street. Design-led responses are now enabling new housing programmes and the delivery of new housing for communities.
