ABSTRACT
The affordable housing sector in Calgary has undergone a major transformation. Housing market challenges culminated in the early 2000s, triggering the beginning of a number of housing-related initiatives. In 2015, Calgary City Council identified a need to reorganize how services were delivered. Since then, Calgary Housing Company has advanced a number of initiatives relating to sustainability, asset management, and developing more holistic and people-focused approach. In 2016, The City of Calgary adopted Foundations for Home, Calgary’s Corporate Affordable Housing Strategy 2016–2025, with a strong emphasis on partnerships, a housing systems approach, and collaboration. A Steering Committee of housing professionals formalized the creation of Calgary’s Community Housing Affordability Collective (CHAC), and began working towards a common voice. Since 2016, 1,171 City-supported new affordable housing units have been completed. Calgary’s affordable housing sector has made great strides towards a more collaborative system, developed new partnerships, and is now reaping the rewards with new housing supply.
