ABSTRACT

The field of criminology informs and is closely intertwined with the ideologies, policies, and operations of the criminal justice system. Accordingly, any discussions of Decolonizing Justice ought to explore the decolonizing of criminology and criminological research. This chapter provides an overview of and practical guide to decolonizing criminological research methodologies and highlights the importance of researchers’ standpoint in approaching ethical guidelines for undertaking research with Indigenous people. It also challenges criminologists to embed Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles within their research to ensure that Indigenous Peoples benefit from criminological research.
