ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 provides an emerging overview of open world learning as seen both from emerging practice and the wider EdTech literature as well as from running a large seven-year PhD programme on open world learning. The world has substantially changed from 2014 to 2021, and in this chapter I critically discuss some of the key enablers and disablers of open world learning and how these have changed over time using a macro-meso-micro perspective. This chapter will help to frame the discussions in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, as well as provide a conceptual framework of how the various studies are interlinked using the 4P themes of people, places, practices, and properties.
