ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the reader with an overall review of how studies on gender roles have influenced theories and practices in water diplomacy. While focused on water diplomacy, the topic is framed as part of a much larger and complex literature of “gender and water,” “gender and development,” “gender and human rights to water and sanitation,” as well as the broader topic of gender and development. Such consideration also includes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with SDG 6 focused on water and sanitation and SDG 5 on gender equality. The chapter seeks to explore the extent to which gender studies and gender-aware practices have impacted the field of water diplomacy. The conclusion of this chapter includes a “take home toolbox” of gender transformative actions for application in water diplomacy.
