ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the renewed role of coworking spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia. It does so by explicitly exploring the model of coworking spaces in Seoul, South Korea. The literature has mainly focused on coworking spaces in Western countries, while studies on Asia are less abundant. This work uses secondary archival research and interviews to focus on aspects of the pandemic that have affected the use of remote working and coworking spaces in Seoul, such as company size, worker demographics (gender and age), employment type, worker industries, and the general culture outlook on the use of teleworking. South Korea represents a unique case because the country had successfully controlled COVID-19 (at the time of writing) since the earliest signs of the global outbreak and because teleworking was promoted by the government years before the pandemic hit.
