ABSTRACT
Welfare concerns regarding equidae predominantly relate to training, management and health associated practices. Horses are used for many purposes in human society and these roles carry differing risks for horse welfare. Unethical and inhumane practices subordinate welfare to competitive and commercial interests. All sectors of the horse industry are responsible for wastage and the unwanted horse problem. A change of habituation of trainers, owners, and industry to inhumane practices and training methods is necessary together with fostering empathy for pain and suffering of the horse. Further to this, regulation and active enforcement of regulation violations including measures for protecting horses in their home environments is necessary.
