ABSTRACT

This chapter broadly covers the law which governs the human animal relationship (“animal law”). It starts by tracing the historical development and authorities which have resulted in the legal classification of animals as property. It then identifies the singular legal interest of the sentient animal protected by law in all jurisdictions that function on anti-cruelty or animal welfare models of legislation and goes on to briefly consider proposed legal reforms. The chapter also provides readers with an introduction to the complex arena of international governance of animal welfare by defining international law, then identifying key organisations and treaties shaping current and future and practices affecting the lives of animals and people alike.
