ABSTRACT

Stakeholders in animal welfare include a wide variety of people involved directly in animal industries, consumers and non-consumers of the output of these industries, and the animals involved. Not all have an equal stake, but the perspective of all must be included in ethical decision-making. Philosophical and scientific reasons for valuing all stakeholders’ perspectives are provided. While ethical sensitivity and empathy are natural phenomena they vary between individuals. It is possible to develop ethical sensitivity which contributes to moral judgement. An ethical decision-making model is provided that facilitates objective consideration of the impacts of all possible actions on all stakeholders to identify the most fitting ethical action.
