ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on an intercultural learning project called “Art Miles Mural Project” (AMMP) implemented at a high school in Japan. This is an international project aiming to develop skills necessary for students to become globally minded citizens, including understanding cultural diversity, thinking and acting independently, and expressing ideas effectively with words and through artworks. As part of the project, Japanese students produced murals collaboratively with students at partner schools in the Czech Republic and Portugal by exchanging messages and opinions on common themes based on sustainable development goals (SDGs). The first section of this chapter discusses English education in Japan, and the theoretical background related to the AMMP. The second section reports on the implementation of the AMMP at the Japanese high school and examines the educational benefits of the AMMP based on participant responses to surveys conducted during and after the project.
