ABSTRACT

Bhutan is a small, landlocked country located in the Eastern Himalayas in South Asia. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south by India. Although Nepal and Bangladesh are close to Bhutan, they do not share a geographical boundary. The exponential rise in the country’s hospitals from just two in 1961 to 55 in 2019 was impressive and is the country’s testament to the efforts of the Ministry of Health (MOH) to intensify primary health care and keep up with global changes in health care. Bhutan is one of the few countries that has effectively managed COVID-19, with only 1,724 confirmed cases and just one fatality as of this time of writing. For COVID-19 preventive and control policies and protocols to be effective and successful, they must be implemented and promoted by effective leaders. Bhutan’s efficient COVID-19 responses hinge on community strength, with the King, the government, and the people working together.
