ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the sustainability challenges faced by the Scandinavian countries and considers the ways libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) are meeting these challenges. The chapter initially introduces the concept of sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Overviews are given on how LAM institutions respond and contribute to central parts of the sustainability agenda and typologies are presented that broadly group LAMs’ activities within these areas. The chapter pays special attention to how current LAM development trends influence LAMs’ approach to the sustainability agenda. The chapter emphasizes diversity, unity, and equality as some of the areas where the Scandinavian LAMs can contribute significantly to a sustainable society. The chapter concludes with a discussion on how LAMs, serving as essential welfare institutions, contribute to the sustainability of the Scandinavian countries.
