ABSTRACT

There are several initiatives and policy frameworks to address the threat of climate change both at the global level and at the national level in India. This chapter provides an overview of these frameworks and discusses an outline of the strategies proposed under India’s National Program on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH). India’s climate change policy has been developed by the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change (PMCC), which was formed in 2007 to guide policy for the assessment, adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Its goal is to reduce morbidity, mortality, injuries and health vulnerability to climate variability and extreme weather events through its objectives of awareness creation on impacts of climate change on human health, strengthening of health system capacity, preparedness and response, vulnerabilities assessment, partnership-building among stakeholders and the establishment of monitoring, surveillance and research capacities in the context of climate change. The Indian policy framework includes the National Action Plan on Climate Change as well as State Actional Plans. The chapter also conducts an exploration of areas for coordination and cooperation with allied programmes related to climate change and health.
