ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the work of TPO Uganda in combining therapeutic groupwork with initiatives to support livelihood activities in order to provide holistic support to refugees in settlements in Uganda. In the settlements, the greatest contributor to psychological distress is poverty, so the provision of livelihood opportunities can strengthen the effectiveness of therapeutic groupwork. The authors use examples and case studies to show how group cognitive behavioural therapy for trauma is integrated with income-generating initiatives such as savings groups and business opportunities, in order to contribute to positive and sustainable change in participants’ wellbeing.
