ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and discusses the power of examples. Based on three anthropological fieldworks and three collaborations with businesses, this chapter argues that ethnographic examples have the potential to become bridge-builders between the researcher and the company, as examples initiate interpretation and dialogue. Examples, however, are also “unruly” in the sense that the reception and meaning of a given example cannot be controlled. But, as demonstrated in the chapter, the process of setting something in motion is exactly what was valued most in the three collaborations. This chapter, therefore, encourages researchers to dare to risk and benefit from the unruliness and power of examples.
