ABSTRACT

How do effective directors ensure that human capital management is optimised for the long-term success of the organisation?

Based on a framework of global corporate governance best practice, which can be used in all organisations anywhere in the world, this chapter of Questions To Ask (QTA) in the boardroom gives a high-level introduction to the subject of human resources (HR).

Managing the human capital of any organisation is critical to the delivery of its business vision and strategy. Good management of HR can resurrect a failing business, turning a challenge into an opportunity. Yet, weak HR actions and a failing HR strategy are the number one reasons which directly or indirectly impact the downfall of every company known in history. Through better understanding generational tensions between executives and the board, board members can better guide, challenge, support, and empower this function and strengthen their contributions and the overall HR mandate.

The chapter’s introduction leads into the key Questions To Ask in the boardroom, giving the reader further insight into how to initiate discussions about the quality of the human resources management and human capital.
