ABSTRACT

How do effective directors ensure their organisations are playing their full part in addressing climatic change?

Based on a framework of global corporate governance best practice, which can be used in all organisations anywhere in the world, this chapter of Questions To Ask (QTA) in the boardroom gives a high-level but succinct introduction to climate change.

Man has been producing, consuming, and disposing of ever more stuff, without weighing up the long-term consequences, for generations. Decades of industrialisation powered by cheap fossil fuels, rapid population growth, and widespread encroachment on the natural world have taken their toll. Extreme weather events coupled with a huge drop in soil fertility is affecting crop yields around the globe. Many natural resources are now harder and costlier to obtain. The climatic change shockwaves impact us all and faster change is needed if everyone is to have the opportunity and capacity to lead a fulfilling life.

The chapter’s introduction leads into outlining the key Questions To Ask in the boardroom, giving the reader further insight into how to initiate discussions about the UN Sustainable Development Goals, valuing what really matters and pursuing extra-financial success.
