ABSTRACT

How do effective directors ensure the organisation is handling social media risks and opportunities appropriately?

Based on a framework of global corporate governance best practice, which can be used in all organisations anywhere in the world, this chapter of Questions To Ask (QTA) in the boardroom gives a high-level but succinct introduction to the role of boards with regards to social media.

All directors should understand the importance of oversight of social media usage and risks for the organisation.

The chapter considers the role of boards with regard to social media at a strategic level. This includes looking at social media in connection with reputation, risk and compliance, customers, investors, executives, and in a crisis situation. It also looks at how social media can be used for the human capital of the organisation.

The chapter’s introduction leads into outlining the key Questions To Ask in the boardroom, giving the reader further insight into how to initiate discussions about the practical details requiring the attention of the board.
