ABSTRACT

During the 2020 presidential election campaign in Poland, the candidates often raised the topic of the LGBTQ community and “LGBT ideology,” which provoked numerous reactions from the public and media in Poland and many other European countries. Based on the results of content analysis of selected foreign media and surveys with members of the LGBTQ community in Poland, as well as desk research and comparative analysis, this chapter investigates how the presidential candidates, and their actions, were covered and how the studied media and the respondents evaluate the attitudes and actions of the presidential candidates towards members of the LGBTQ community during the campaign. This chapter provides new information about a socially important topic broadly discussed in the public discourse in Poland, taking into consideration the use of “us” vs. “them” rhetoric in relation to the LGBTQ community and the problem of sociopolitical polarisation in the country.
