ABSTRACT
The artifactual approach to models is a relatively recent perspective on modeling. Artifactualism serves as a unifying concept for a variety of approaches that regard models as instruments, tools, or artifacts. This chapter discusses the different artifactual approaches to modeling that differ from each other in how they position themselves vis-à-vis the traditional representational accounts. What the artifactual approaches have in common is their pragmatic orientation and the focus on how scientists construct, manipulate, and experiment with models. The relationship between the artifactual and fictional approaches is also discussed.
