ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the urbanization-migration nexus from a human security perspective. Using the city of Nairobi in Kenya as a case study, the chapter examines the nature and scope of human (in)security associated with migration to the city; develops a conceptual framework for analyzing human security and the urbanization-migration nexus, and discusses the role of governance in ensuring human security. The chapter relies on a desktop survey of available literature from government publications and other published documents. The chapter establishes, among other things, that migration presents significant human security challenges for the city of Nairobi, and poor governance contributes to these challenges. The chapter recommends that the county government (i.e., city administrators) should work with the national government and other stakeholders (e.g., non-governmental organizations) to roll out a migration policy/program for effective management of migration, especially in the context of urban centers such as Nairobi City. The chapter also note that a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach in research is needed for stronger partnership on issues of advocacy against the proliferation of small arms in the country-side and urban centers.
