ABSTRACT

Human security has attracted considerable political and academic interest since the early 1990s. This chapter focuses on Rwanda and provides an analysis of the human security situation in the country from an economic perspective. Rwanda’s recent history makes it a good case study for understanding human security in practice. The chapter discusses Rwanda’s efforts at addressing poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, gender inequality, and ensuring sustainable access to healthcare services as a step toward achieving human security in the country. The chapter argues that cross-cutting issues such as gender inequality, land tenure (in)security, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic undercut Rwanda’s efforts aimed at ensuring human security for all its citizens.
