ABSTRACT
The objective of this chapter is to discuss the on-the-job training of lawyer linguists employed by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the capacity of translators and revisers. The chapter first gives an overview of the Court’s translation and revision practices, including lawyer linguists’ tasks and the main types of documents they translate. It next discusses the recruitment of lawyer linguists and the induction and training programme offered to newcomers, which comprises three modules, each with a different theme: a module on technology, a module on research and quality management and a module on the institution as a whole. Finally, the chapter discusses the continuing professional development (CPD) of lawyer linguists. Its core components are language courses and legal courses, supplemented by training sessions addressing both technological and soft skills. Each language unit has a lawyer linguist acting also as a training correspondent who collects information about the unit’s training needs. Whereas the core components of the Court’s CPD have not changed significantly over time, it has become more targeted and individualized.
