ABSTRACT

Gitarama prefecture was a major killing field and five years after the genocide, close to 1,000 children from this prefecture, who were at the time of the genocide between the ages of seven and fifteen years, documented what they experienced from the time the killings started on April 6, 1994, until the time they were rescued. Unfortunately, societies that neglect to listen, collect, preserve, and disseminate testimonies of genocide survivors can at best be described as having committed an injustice to survivors and humanity. This chapter shows how mental trauma, resisting the genocide, schooling, healing mechanisms, among other issues, are manifested in these children's handwritten testimonies.
