ABSTRACT
In 2019, the US government established the National Defense Authorization Act and tasked a commission with making recommendations. That commission, led by former Google chairman Eric Schmidt, produced a report highlighting the need for AI talent development in the United States, along with accelerating the development of AI and associated technologies. One thing that Schmidt and the commission make very clear, the United States faces many technical skills gaps across industries when it comes to AI. As this excerpted report observes, time is of the essence in the race with China. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies promise to be the most powerful tools in generations for expanding knowledge, increasing prosperity, and enriching the human experience. As the report observes, AI will be the foundation for an innovation economy and a source of enormous power for countries that harness it.
