ABSTRACT
There are over 250 million students in India. The quality of education that these students receive will determine the trajectory of the country’s future. The lessons that Indian students receive will need to prepare them to compete in an economy where innovation has globalized and access to knowledge has become the key to advancement. Making the most of the country’s “demographic dividend” will require using technology to improve the availability and relevance of learning materials and methods. To that end, India’s government, industry, investors, and entrepreneurs are focused on building on the proliferation of smartphones to facilitate the growth of enormous learning platforms. As the chapter’s author concludes, the successes and failures of India’s EdTech companies hold key lessons for the rest of the world on how to leverage connectivity, software, and personalization to improve the capabilities and potential of a new generation of young learners.
