ABSTRACT

In this Corner of the World is a 2016 anime film based on the manga of the same title by Kouno Fumiyo. It has generated a large fandom that travels to locations in Kure and Hiroshima. A characteristic of the fandom is the sense of ibasho (a place where you belong). This derives from a line in the film, and also represents the spirit of the fandom. This chapter examines the lengths to which the manga/anime creators went to ensure authenticity in the depictions of wartime life, and how this influences fans appreciation of the film and associated tourism.
