ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on three main lines of inquiry related to the coronavirus’s effects on Middle East and North Africa countries. It traces ‘autocratic linkages’ between the selected Gulf Cooperation Council states and China during the COVID-19 pandemic. The book then analyses how the connections between Iran and Hezbollah have impaired responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in Lebanon. It also argues that mass media have been fulfilling a particular role during the COVID-19 pandemic, since they help spread daily messages from the decision makers on the latest progress and necessary measures. The book describes a re-strengthening of existing authoritarian patterns in Morocco: King Mohammed VI has succeeded in taking the undisputed leadership position in the management of the crisis at the expense of the parliament and the elected government.
