ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that students of ecomedia should understand fan worlds as media matrices of written, televisual, and material environments rather than isolated works. Using classic and contemporary theory, the chapter constructs a model for understanding a matrix of media in semiotic, intertextual, mesocosmic, and phenomenological terms. It then applies this model to two examples from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther and WandaVision. It concludes that students of ecomedia should change the way they read, interpret, and understand such environments.
