The Use of the Sword

This chapter explores ‘the use of the sword’ in relation to the civil magistrate, war, empire, and slavery. Although Protestants often defended these uses of the sword, the more interesting reflections emerge from Protestants who have seen the sword turned against them or who were otherwise able to reflect on the impact of violence on religious minorities, enemies, Indigenous peoples, and enslaved people.
