ABSTRACT
After a short history of sex segregation of prisons, the chapter describes evolving U.S. federal and state policies regarding the assignment (and definition of) transgender inmates. A comparison with the United Kingdom is provided, since the UK has a national gender recognition policy that is quite different from the United States. Different policies and their implicit values and interests are described, with the chapter concluding that the United States should be informed by the UK experience.
