ABSTRACT
This chapter charts the evolution of thinking about sex and gender since the 1950s. We have gone through three stages, the first of which focused entirely on sex and sex-roles, the second distinguished between biological sex and psychological gender (still the most common understanding), and a third stage in which sex/gender tend to be collapsed into one category for various reasons.
