The chapter begins by recounting the history of single-sex schools in order to understand the rationale for sex-based definitions. The values and interests involved in decisions to admit or exclude transgender applicants are explored. The primary focus is collegiate; K-12 schools are also discussed. This chapter is informed not only by accessed published sources, but also by interviews with heads of schools and presidents of single-sex colleges.
