ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a brief history of sex segregation in public bathrooms. It explains the importance of allowing transgender people, especially young people, access to the bathroom of their gender. It then describes the controversies in Texas and North Carolina over so-called “bathroom bills” and the underlying values of discriminatory regulations. The chapter ends with a brief exploration of alternatives to sex-segregated bathrooms.
