ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief history of the exclusion of women from the military, their eventual inclusion, the evolution of the military’s policy toward gay and lesbian service members, and controversy during the Obama and Trump administrations over permitting transgender service members. The chapter includes a discussion of the Pentagon’s decision to exclude two graduating transgender cadets from West Point and the Air Force Academy.
