ABSTRACT

The Arab Spring which started in 2010 changed the tide of history, with regimes which had been in power for decades in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya removed through youth toppled. The movements contended with violence in the hands of instrumentalised state security apparatuses that were protecting the elites. More than a decade after the Arab Spring, there was the need to assess the status of youth movements in Tunisia. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the stories of youth movements in Tunisia, especially, in relation to their contribution to protecting the changes that they fought for, and the challenges that they presently contend with. Interviews and Focus Group Discussions were organised with young people in Tunisia with the aim of providing a clear picture of the activities of youth-led social movements in the country and the context within which they operate and contribute to the changes that the youth fought for during the Arab Spring.
