ABSTRACT

This chapter interrogates the approach of the African Union and its Regional Economic Communities (RECs), such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CENSAD), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), and the East African Community (EAC), to youth and youth-led social movements in Africa. It specifically examines the policies that the respective RECs have related to young people and have they have been dealing with issues related to Youth-Led Social Movements in their regions. Additionally, this chapter examines the integration of United Nations (UN) Conventions and UN Security Council Resolutions that promote and protect the rights and welfare of young people by the respective RECs and how those use of those frameworks have enhanced the approach to youth by regional bodies in Africa.
