ABSTRACT
The glassy metaphors of transparent windows, faithful mirrors, and single beads are as dominant in modern empiricist epistemology as they are in modern translation. Yet in practice, other clusters of metaphors still capture essential aspects of both experience and translation. These now-repressed alternative metaphors of movement, transformation, and assimilation are on clear and instructive display in premodern theories of experience and practices of translation.
