ABSTRACT

Co-authored by Improving Social Inclusion for People with Dementia and Carers through Sharing Dance project researchers, the aim of this chapter is to highlight the potential for arts-based programs to improve social inclusion in ageing communities. Focusing on the lessons learned from the Sharing Dance Older Adults research project, the chapter explores the ways in which a dance program fostered community capacity building and social inclusion in two Canadian provinces. A key feature of the chapter is the emphasis on rural community development, which is often missing from existing research into the potential for arts-based programs for ageing and health.
