ABSTRACT
This chapter traces the textual and visual traditions of punishments meted out to female sinners in the afterlife for the transgression of refusing to nurse infants. It postulates an Egyptian element, and perhaps a monastic background, in the formation of these traditions and reads the extant evidence in light of the social control of women, especially in rural communities.
