ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a vision for the world’s landscapes of the twenty-second century and summarizes the most important lessons learned from the 15 case studies presented in the book. Lessons learned from these case studies can help us to expand our understanding of the diversity of problems, as well as the practicality of solutions in the real world. There is a need for having a clear vision for the processes and structures that we want to maintain, but we have to be flexible and innovative in thinking about how we might achieve that. The creation of resilient landscapes is associated with a broad range of challenges, many of which have similar root causes. It is synergy, combined with cooperation, integration, and multifunctionality, that can help us to depart from this point toward a more resilient future. The creation of resilient landscapes is a process that is sensitive to socio-ecological parameters and spatiotemporal scales. Resilience helps us to refocus on the how rather than the end point.
